Hason Correa was a 35-year-old son, married husband, father of 3, and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, who was brutally beaten and stabbed during a fight outside a Harlem apartment building.
4 siblings named Christopher, James, and Mary Saunders, along with their brother, Travis Stewart, were arrested by police and charged with murder and gang assault in the brutal incident.
The case stayed in court until 2022 when Alvin Bragg was chosen and took over as DA.
By year’s end, James Saunders pleaded guilty and he was sentenced to gang assault and 2nd-degree murder and was given a sentence of 20 years to life in prison and lower than the maximum sentence of 25 years to life.
Christopher Saunders was sentenced to gang assault after a trial and was punished with 20 years to life, while Mary Saunders and Travis Stewart pleaded guilty to just gang assault.
Travis Stewart was convicted to 7 years in prison and Mary Saunders was released on the 14 months she had already spent at Rikers Island.
The Manhattan Attorney’s Office rejected to comment on Thursday but noted that all 4 of the defendants were convicted or pleaded guilty, with 2 getting hefty prison sentences.
But Madeline Brame, who is now chairperson at the non-profit advocacy group Victims Rights Reform Council, said she felt like the district attorney treated her and her family “like garbage.
