Dean Cain Biography

George Tanaka was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan in 1966 to a U.S. serviceman father and an actress mother. When Dean was just a few months old, his mother moved him and his older brother Roger to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. It was in Los Angeles that Sharon Thomas met and married film director Christopher Cain, who later adopted Dean and Roger. The family moved to Malibu, California, where Dean grew up alongside his sister Krisinda.

As a student at Santa Monica High School, Dean excelled in sports, particularly football. His talent on the field earned him a scholarship to Princeton University, where he played as a free safety on the football team. During his time at Princeton, Cain set a season record with 12 interceptions in just ten games and finished his collegiate career with 22 interceptions in 30 games. His outstanding performance on the field earned him the John P. Poe–Richard W. Kazmaier, Jr. Football Trophy during his senior year. It was also during his time at Princeton that Cain dated actress Brooke Shields.

After graduating from Princeton with a Bachelor of Arts in history, Cain signed on as a free agent with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, a knee injury during training camp cut his football career short. With little hope of returning to sports, Cain turned his attention to screenwriting and acting. He began his career by appearing in dozens of commercials, including a volleyball-themed spot for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes. He also landed minor roles on popular television shows like “Grapevine,” “A Different World,” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

Cain’s big break came in 1993 when he was cast as Superman in the hit television series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” The show was a massive success and made Cain a household name. His portrayal of the Man of Steel won him critical acclaim and a legion of fans around the world.

Since his stint as Superman, Cain has appeared in numerous films and television shows, showcasing his versatility as an actor. He has also become a fixture in the world of faith-based films, starring in several movies with Christian themes. Cain is also known for his work in Christmas films, having appeared in 16 holiday-themed movies to date.

In addition to his acting career, Cain has hosted several reality shows, including “10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty” and “Stars Earn Stripes.” He also had a guest role on the Netflix original series “Lady Dynamite.”

Outside of his career in entertainment, Cain has also pursued other interests. In 2018, he became the Actor in Residence at High Point University. Dean Cain has also dated other high-profile women including Brooke Shields and professional beach volleyball player Gabrielle Reece. Cain also became engaged to singer Mindy McCready in 1997, but the couple split up the following year.
